High-tech National Security Firm Plans Bloomington Expansion

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Feb. 9, 2011) - Gryphon Technologies, an engineering and technical services firm, today announced plans to expand its operations here, creating up to 60 new jobs by 2013.

Gryphon Technologies, which established an Indiana presence less than two years ago, provides engineering, logistics, process management and software development services to national security clients including the U.S. Department of Defense.  The company plans to invest more than $800,000 to lease and equip an office at 2088 Liberty Drive in Bloomington.

"Indiana's defense industry has developed revolutionary technologies that protect our service members on the battlefields abroad and provide good paying jobs for Hoosier families at home. Today's good news from Gryphon Technologies is a signal that our state will continue its decades-long tradition of being an important place for national security work," said Governor Mitch Daniels.

The company, which in July was awarded a $26.6 million contract by the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane for logistics and technical support services, currently employs nearly 20 associates and plans ongoing hiring of engineers and logistics professionals.

"Gryphon's expansion to Indiana was a logical step in our growth strategy, especially given Crane's national security and technology focus and the highly educated labor pool that is available in the area," said Clint Jacobs, technical director and Bloomington operations manager for Gryphon.

Headquartered in Maryland, Gryphon has been recognized as one of America's Fastest Growing Private Companies by Inc. magazine for the past seven consecutive years.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Gryphon Technologies up to $525,000 in performance-based tax credits based on the company's job creation plans.

"Gryphon is a shining example of Bloomington's rapidly growing technology industry and highlights the incredible value that NSWC Crane has on our region's economy and quality of life," said Ron Walker, president, Bloomington Economic Development Corporation.  "These good-paying, highly skilled jobs will have an immediate impact on our economy, but Gryphon's presence in Bloomington also bolsters our growing national recognition as an emerging technology center."

Indiana is home to a $6.6 billion defense contracting industry that employs thousands of Hoosiers across the state. Just last fall, MDV, a grocery distributor for military commissaries, announced plans to invest $10.6 million to locate a new operation in Bloomington, creating up to 100 new jobs by 2014. The company will supply Indiana commissaries, including NSWC Crane.
